Tougher Visa rules to be introduced in Spring 2024

Following the increase of the majority of UK Visa application fees last month (04 October), the government announced that an increase to the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) fee will also come into effect in the 2024, which has now been officially confirmed to be from 06 February 2024.

This will be a significant increase, which will see the current IHS fee for adults of £624 per year go up to £1,035 per year.

For children and students, the current fee of £470 per year will go up to £776 per year.

What is the IHS?

The Immigration Health Surcharge enables migrants to gain access to the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, throughout the duration of their visa.

It is mandatory for most visa applicants* coming to live, work or study in the UK for a period longer than 6 months.

It must also be paid (in full) up front, along with the visa application fee. - This is even the case if you have your own private medical insurance.

*Applicants applying under the health and care worker visa are currently exempt from having to pay the IHS fee.

You can calculate the total IHS fee you will currently need to pay for your and/or your dependant’s visa application(s) on the GOV.UK website here.
